Clemens LOWIK

Dr. Clemens WGM Lowik is head of the Endocrinology Research Laboartory at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in the Netherlands. Dr Lowik has 21 years experience in basic aspects of bone metabolism including bone-related cancer and is responsible for Basic Bone Research programme. One of the main lines of investigation of the group of Dr. Lowik concerns “Molecular mechanisms involved in metastatic bone disease” and focusses on 1) the role of angiogenesis in bone development, tumour progression and metastasis. 2). Factors and genes involved in the preferential metastases of breast cancer and prostate cancer to bone. 3) Real-time gene expression using bioluminescent reporter imaging (BLI).

Within the EMIL network we will develop new assays and animal models based on BLI and/ or GFP, for early detection of tumors and for investigation of the role of specific genes involved in tumour development, progression and metastasis. The Leiden group at LUMC will also offer training facilities for Bioluminescent Imaging and NMR microscopy.
